ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is one of four artworks in the "Oz" series dedicated to the trauma of losing a pet. We had a German Shepherd rescue that was our first dog. He appeared to be half-coyote. We had seven amazing years with him before cancer struck. The profound loss showed that our pets are our family. The struggle was then documented through the Oz series from initial loss to eventual healing.

Eric Guenette is an abstract painter working in latex and acrylic paint, spray paint, oil markers, pencil, as well as other media on canvas and fiberboard. He also paints primarily with scraps of cut wood and rarely uses brushes. The organic nature of the work is carried through from the structural frames that are hand-built from scratch to the drop cloth fabric and other found fabric materials for canvasing. Most of the works are framed with clean and simple white painted pine. Hanging hardware is added and all artwork is sold ready to hang. “I feel a strong connection to my grandfather, Marcel, who was a custom golf shoe maker at Footjoy in Brockton, Massachusetts. He was a man that could build anything with his hands. I draw upon his spirit and creativity as I work on pieces. Painting with wood scraps of wood and house paint takes me back to his old wood shop and creates a fully organic process from frame to canvas to paint application. The angled cuts on the scrapers allow for a repetitious motion to scrape and re-apply paint quickly in the same movement, depending on the angle of the stroke. I hope to carry his spirit on in my work.” –Eric Guenette Eric Guenette was born in Winter Park, Florida (1967) and grew up in Palm Beach County, Florida area until he moved to Albuquerque in 2009. He is currently in Lagos, Portugal as of 2024.
