This painting is based on a sketch done around twenty two years ago along the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge Massachusetts. The sketch has the person seated on the bench turned slightly toward the sun and looking down reading. In the painting the person is looking straight ahead. One might consider it to be a painting about isolation. It is rather a picture about being alone, not lonely. A serene scene, a park bench facing a slow moving river. Trees and grass across the river, buildings mostly hidden remind us this is in fact a cityscape. The figure is painted flat and black. For me the person seated on the bench is the self, or no self. Or it can be viewed as someone relaxing before moving forward with their busy day. When I look at this composition my eye is first pulled toward the sharp contrast between the nearly white light refractive in the river and the black of the figure. The strong horizontal lines are broken only by the verticals of the trees and legs of the bench. The only perception of space is limited to color, shading, and volume, influenced by Japanese woodblock prints.
