Persephone and Hermes in the Underworld is part of a series of contemporary mythological narrative paintings titled Mythic Images. Here, Persephone, the queen of the underworld, confronts the viewer holding a pomegranate as Hermes struggles with skeletons while attempting to retrieve her. The piece combines figuration and abstraction, creating a multilayered, expressionist pictorial space. Passages of impasto paint texture appear next to thin, luminous areas with visible brushstrokes. Layering created with an indirect painting technique is juxtaposed with marks of spontaneity on the paint surface. Dramatic, cinematic-style lighting offsets deep shadows, creating an eerie underworld setting that is made more playful by the dynamic, whimsically-animated skeletons. Note: This artwork is a diptych painting on two canvases, the dividing line is noted in the image.
