What we perceive as bad may not be bad. What we perceive as good may not be good. The dance of life is a mystery. This piece was inspired by this zen story: The old man and his son lived in a remote mountain village, and they had a horse. One day it ran away. The villagers said, “Oh, what bad luck.” And the old man said, “we shall see.” Two days later, the horse came back and brought a young stallion with it. The villagers said, “What good luck!” And the old man said, “we shall see.” His son was riding the young stallion and fell off and broke his leg. The villagers said, “What bad luck!” And the old man said, “we shall see.” The next day, the king declared war. All young men had to leave the village to go to the army except for the old man’s son. And the villagers said, “Oh! What good luck!” And the old man said, “we shall see.”
