Rise up This ghostly and ethereal painting is inspired by the following quote from The Little Mermaid - the original and Dark tale. “‘When you complete your fifteenth year,’ grandmother said, ‘you will be allowed to rise up out of the sea, sit in the moonlight on the rocks and watch the big ships that sail past – you will see forests and cities!’ During the following year one of the sisters turned fifteen, but the others, well, each one was a year younger than the other, so the youngest had no less than five years to wait before she would venture to come up from the sea-bed and see how things are in our world. But each one promised the other to relate what she had seen and found most delightful on that first day; for their grandmother did not tell them enough, there was so much they wanted to know about. As part of this years Folk Tale week on Instagram, I was inspired to use some of their prompts to express the feelings I was having during the odd times we have been going through and especially the odd and vivid underwater almost trapped feeling dreams I have been having.” by Hans Christian Anderson The painting is 14.5cm x 21cm painted on wood panel, the surface is smooth, I have worked here are many, many layers of paint and ink and varnish it also includes old leaf, the texture is tactile, with crackle effects and smooth finishes, you want to run your hands and your eyes over it! There are so many gorgeous layers the surface lets the image slip in and out of focus, its really beautiful. In the layers pearly inks catch the light and the surface can almost look like water. The piece was created as part of the Den Lille Harfrue Collection – the little mermaid. Created in lockdown to express my feelings about the restrictions, being unable to have social contact and also experiencing incredibly vivid and at some times quite scary dreams, a lot based underwater. Not only did I draw on my own vivid dreams as inspiration for this piece, and this whole collection, I also looked at one of my favourite Fairy Tales as a Child- The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Anderson.

A sensitive, creative introvert provides the highest form of hope in her art. Meet Dianne Bowell, a full-time professional artist based in the North East of England fueled by personal memories, dreams fantasies, and even traumas. Her best work expressed through “happy accidents” reveals a free flow of artistry labelled as usable, repeatable techniques, drips, spills, and layers. Enriched with formal education, Dianne holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the University of Sunderland, a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts, Painting and Drawing from the University of Huddersfield, and a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from The Northern School of Art in her hometown of Middlesbrough. These milestones gained nationally and local exhibitions including solo exhibitions, group shows, both commercial and gallery settings as well as commercial and private commissions. It was the painting by Gerhard Richter, “Woman Descending a Staircase,” when she was 20 that cemented her passion which was painting. “I firmly believe that each painting is an idea waiting to be created and each piece forms a connection to the energy that creates worlds,” exclaims Dianne. “The viewer and ultimately the collector are able to connect to the universe through the work.” With 13 solo exhibitions and more than twenty-five group exhibitions, the expressive artistry of Dianne Bowell is not over.
