SELF-IMPRISONMENT is an expression of the shells we create for ourselves, of ourselves—perhaps due to trauma, fear, etc.—that prevents us from being our full, authentic selves. The painting was created using acrylics for the background, warm oil colors for the inner character, and slightly cooler oil colors for the ‘prison’ to create a visual difference between the ‘prison’ and the character. The painting is also fitted with hanging hardware.

Balogun Kehinde is an emerging visual artist, working primarily in mixed media [oils, acrylics, and other media]. She started creating digital art in 2016 and switched to traditional art in 2020. Conceptually, Kehinde portrayed black women semi-realistically in her digital art to celebrate their beauty while with traditional art, she rendered black bodies in relation to their human experience and emotions through subtle surrealism. Kehinde’s art has been featured in a few exhibitions with the latest being at the University of Lagos, her art has also been featured in a few publications including the Nigerian Institute of Architecture’s journal with a few pieces belonging to collectors in Lagos and Palo Alto, California.
