About The Artwork

SLO is a play ground for the imagination. I worked on SLO over the span of five years and some change, through joy, through tears, through thick, and through thin. SLO is a ritual, building it, layer by layer, without a plan, or intention, just simply to paint and see where it goes. I don’t work this way on everything, just once and a while I have bursts of energy, a voice speaks, though not from my head. And slowly, bit by bit it evolved into this epic painting. In literal terms it is a long-distance painting, a paintamentary, a document through paint. It was started as a live painting in an urban setting, a canvas passed onto form one artist to another. I worked on it in my studio. SLO travelled with me, wherever I could bring it, including the Natural environment and my current home British Columbia. It is a recollection of memories and feelings, and in some ways an expression of my personality. My process is akin to a ritualistic exorcism, freeing myself from the day to day grind, and immersing myself into the creative act. The mask motif has been a long-standing interest of mine, referencing persona as well as my early fascination with Japanese Kabuki. There is the Eagle, a life-long curiosity of mine, and perhaps some form of totem or messenger. The eagle reminds me to remain aware and connected with my environment. There is a multitude of clues in it's strata, offering various degrees of realism, abstraction, metaphor and even a little bit of supernatural reference. Notably my paintings, and my art, offers space for the viewer, who are free to interpret, and even daydream. I recommend marinating in a painting, over time, slowly, and naturally. I consider paintings to be a portal, or window, where we can view each other, safely and peacefully. Technical notes: I do recommend viewing it in different lighting scenarios. It is recommended to placed near ground level, and viewed from both, close up and far away. This is a rare artwork for me, those who have viewed it, loved the experience.
