ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 1975, the year after I graduated from art school, I spent a month in Europe touring the museum to see the works I had studied. Sitting on the floor at Lyon Station in Paris, waiting for a train to Nice, I pulled out my sketchbook and got to work capturing the passing parade of people traveling to or from the South of France. A bit of one person here, ad bit of another there. I suppose my influence was Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2”, which I was familiar with from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. My original drawings were charcoal pencil on toned beige paper. In 2021, I played with these in different color palettes, three of which I offer here.

“I create convergent media art that celebrates the values of rural life and of the land itself, that fosters a sense of self-empowerment, self-love, self-representation, community, and the strengths of traditional cultures. My work explores the relationship between both high and low technology cultures, ethnic and class identities, shamanic tourism, and an expanding sense of the natural and supernatural worlds. As a verbal and visual storyteller, I strive to commit my rich and varied life experiences to canvas and paper, sharing the ceremonial life of indigenous communities in both normal and visionary time, and exploring concepts of strength and vulnerability through treatments of my royal, noble, and humble ancestors. What starts out as contemplation becomes, I hope, a portal for the viewer to briefly enter another reality, leaving only a sense of a picture album of the road not taken and a eulogy for the self-imposed limits of our existence.” Books "ESCAPE From the Darkroom! - Old-School Principles Applied to Modern Digital Photography" [2013] “GeoHypnotics: A Gentle Way to Access Deeper Consciousness” [2016] Four volumes ; ; ;
