About The Artwork

Turner. Constable - esque painting. Inspired by at least. An imagined scene of Brighton past, a seaside town in a more industrial labour intensive age. The piece came about after a weird 'smog' enveloped the east sussex coast one day that summer. It made me ill breathing it in at the beach in Brighton, there were reports that it made some people very ill. It was ambiguous as to what the culprit was, pollution, a peak in gases, a boat releasing the gases, electrical reaction of turbines or a chemical attack! Anyway it provoked me to paint this bygone era scene of when there were more smog, factories, fishermen etc. What was that gas?
