ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I'm continually inspired by the Solway Coast and surrounding areas. This multi-layered painting in pastel gives a glimpse of the Solway Coast and the hills beyond from the aspect of the surrounding field margin. The highlights in the soft, golden clouds in the distance are reflected in the dry, pale grasses in the foreground which is interspersed with purple thistle heads in various stages of bloom including the downy heads of those gone to seed. I hope to guide the viewer on a journey from the colourful field margin filled with soft (and prickly!) thistles, across the calm Solway waters to the golden cloud-shrouded moody hills beyond. Pastel is the ideal medium for rendering both soft and sharp-edged images while now and then blending one into the other in an abstracted (yet immediately recognisable) way.

I live in the South West of Scotland with my husband Ian and have been a member of Dumfries & Galloway Fine Art Society for several years. The Society was founded in 1922 and celebraters its centenary in 2022. Early members include E.A. Hornel, Charles Oppenheimer and Jessie King. My art style is expressionistic and contemporary and I have worked in several mediums over the last few years but presently use Acrylics or soft pastels to render my seascape paintings. When using Acrylics, I use a range of paints, including Winsor & Newton, on Winsor & Newton thrice primed canvas mounted on a wooden frame. For Pastels I use either Winsor & Newton universal paper or Ingres paper.
