This painting is from a series titled "Allegory of the Cave" in which I explore light and shadows as suggestions of space. It was inspired by this quotation from Plato's Allegory of the cave (circa 380 BC): "...And suppose once more, that he is reluctantly dragged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he is forced into the presence of the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated? When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities. – S * Not all in a moment, he said. – G * He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world. And first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves... – S"

When I was 9, my mom thought I had a brain tumor. I explained to her that when I closed one eye, the world was all deep blues and aquamarine, and when I closed the other, the world was warm oranges and reds. One pediatrician, three neurologists, and an eye doctor later realized that nothing was wrong with my brain. I simply had an acute sensitivity to color. My creative practice is about translating my perception of colors and light to canvas to evoke a sense of wonder in the viewer. I use layers of transparent oil paint to create glowing pieces that connect to deeply personal narratives.
