A conceptual piece that references the use of trees as temples, totems, icons of strength and virility, religious symbols, and environmental protectors. I am keenly interested in the ancient relationship between trees and forests, and places of worship and security. For instance; the entasis utilised in pillars in classical architecture, both for strength and aesthetic qualities, but also borrowed from the natural growth and shape of trees in the forest; the original temple. The image is constructed from rhythmic, impasto mark making that delivers a weight and tension to the pop pallette and surreal composition. Oil and acrylic on canvas.

Drawing from the autobiographical, Duncan Morris’s practice involves a fascination with the intangible phenomenon that occurs when our inner world appears to overlay our perception of the outer world. Using rhythmic mark making, lurid colours and ambiguous perspective, his paintings often depict psychological states and are characterised by a dynamic crowding of composition in which lonely figures seem engulfed in a state of quiet introspection. Infused with allusions to mythology, folklore and poetry alongside references to modernist artists such as Morandi, De Chirico and Guston, each painting is a journey, an attempt to find a concise yet visually poetic resolution to the dilemma of perception, reality, memory and dreams.
