About The Artwork

Once upon a time being abroad like a refugee I saw a big bush of sunflower. Somehow it had a huge stem with lots of flowers on it`s branches. Flowers were looking down with its "heads" but stem was confidently holding all of them. I was missing my motherland and sunflowers like a symbol of our unbreakability impressed me much. I decided to write a new watercolour in pixel style. And now you can watch it. Pixel technique in watercolour is quite unusual but it makes the artpiece work in a vibrant way. Each square sized 1x1 cm is fulled with a shade of colour which is different from the previous one. The general picture is a colourful carpet of rich range of shades. Why pixel technique? While our militaries put on military uniform (the camouflage ornament is called ukrainian pixel) we are, civilians see this world quite on the other way) with the unison with our defenders... Buying Ukrainian art you are supporting Ukraine, you are collecting something what is under the risk of dissapearing and enriching your own collection. Thank you!

Olena Rublova is a watercolor artist with a background in science. Having received her formal education in biology and ecology, her artistic interests are focused on the issues of biodiversity, portraiture of species, pristine and feral landscapes, and the effect of man and climate change on all. While her work partly reflects her fascination with nature’s beauty, throughout her life Rublova has been witness to the anthropogenic transformation and degradation of her native Donetsk’s environment through industrialization, mining, chemical plant development, and most recently – war. The Russian aggression continues to create devastating consequences for the Ukrainian and regional eco-systems of an unknown scope. Utilizing primarily watercolor, she finds parallels in the characteristics of the technique to the contradictions of a lived reality – its unpredictability, speed, and diverse expressive possibilities. Nowadays Olena is also involved in work on the cultural front because of russia's war on the territory of Ukraine creating project "Filters of time" in pixel style Olena Rublova born in Horlivka, Donetsk region,1987. She graduated from the Donetsk National University with a degree in biology and ecology. Her continued education includes attendance of art classes in the fine art studio of I.V. She was also a member of the cultural project "Watercolor Breath" and the creative association "Five". She has worked at the Center of Culture and Arts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and The Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv assuming roles from exhibition organizer, graphic and set designer, to educational workshop moderator.
