ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a sought-after, key piece. Like the other paintings in the Deepwater collection, this is a view from a humble, non-threatening human point of view, deep-down looking up towards the light at the surface. Everything is movement and light - both elements which are critical to life...and natural science. The underwater environment is a lesser known place, a well-kept secret, and yet vital to our existence on Earth. This work brings land and sea together in the same scape so that we can be mindful. The gannets survey for fish from the sky, fold back their big wings and dive from a height like darts into the sea for fish they have spotted from above. It is survival of the fittest. The painting is framed in a beautiful high quality wooden gilt frame which compliments the blues, and is ready to hang. The 'R' for Rhian is signed on the bottom corner, and is also signed on the reverse. Prints are available too.

Pictures can change our lives. Tenby born artist Rhian Field lives and works in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK.  Having been taught to draw and observe nature like an artist by her Father from a very young age, she is now coastal science-trained and paints with a purpose, with an understanding of how everything connects in a meaningful way. As an Expressionist painter, her beautiful subaqua 'Deepwater Collection' captures the light and movement which is essential for life in our Oceans. Her collectors include ecologist-divers and those who are mesmerised by our coastal and aquatic environment. Subjects include Grey Seals, diving birds such as Guillemots, Razorbills and Gannets, as well as Jellyfish, Octopus and Kelp. Rhian believes Art has a role to play beyond decoration and aesthetic enjoyment, proposing that "art is a powerful tool, and perhaps artists and scientists alike, have a responsibility to engage humankind in critical matters." She also believes that art has no value without the viewer as consuming art requires the creative brain. Rhian has exhibited her paintings in public spaces across Wales and in Scotland, collaborating with organisations such as the the National Assembly for Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the RSPB.  Most of her work is inspired by her degree in Coastal & Marine Environment Studies and played an important role in her recent PhD field research, which explored the potential for artistic visuals to engage the public in climate change. She is currently working on art which expresses human struggles with power in our complex world.
