This painting was inspired by the Tacos vs Burritos – El Luchador restaurant at the corner of John Street and South Street in Lower Manhattan. Set at night, the scene is lit by spot lights, string lights, and neon lights, casting green, orange, and red light, respectively, contrasting the sky-blue interiors. The figures are in four separate spaces – the trailer, outdoors, and two rooms inside the restaurant. The woman’s face just to the right of the trailer seems to be lit by the reflection off the arrow sign. The El Luchador (wrestler) logo is repeated four times – as cut-outs on the railing, brightly lit on the wall, and in shadow on the sign.

Award winning realist painter Nick Savides learned to paint from his mother at 3 years old and never stopped. Inspired by the works of Edward Hopper, the quiet energy within his art captures both a palpable sensation of light and of place. Mr. Savides has been published twice by Nabi Press, featuring urban images of New York City and Paris, as well as landscapes of upstate New York.
