About The Artwork

The painting "Technologies of Revolution" is based on the 1960-1970s painting on canvas bottom layer, a post-war socialist realism copy painting produced at the Odessa Branch of the Artists' Union of the USSR Art Fund Combine. This painting was exhibited for the first time within the “ECCA "Tea Factory” curatorial project “Mausoleum Renaissance” in “Ya Gretera” Gallery in Kiev in Ukraine, in September of 2012. The ECCA “Tea Factory” young artists have breathed new life into the neo-classicist and primitivist retrostyle art pieces, reinventing them and giving them a fresh, contemporary perspective. The project is a great example of how art can be used to reflect the changing social and political situation in a country, and to express the feelings and ideas of a new generation. It provides an interesting insight into the development of art in the past decades, and how it has been used to challenge and comment on the events of the time. Artists do not intend to ridicule the Socialist era in their work; rather, they are attempting to evaluate the exchange of ideas and to examine the historical events that occurred during this period. The normative definition of the correct style for Socialist Realism was very limiting and did not allow for exploration of alternative art-historical models. This lack of variety was particularly strict during the "Zdanov era" in the years immediately following World War II. Susan Reid, in her book The "art memory": retrospectivism in Soviet painting of the Breznev era, Art of the Soviets, 1917-1992, states that during this time period, the dogma of Socialist Realism was unyielding and uncompromising. Artists were not given the opportunity to express themselves freely through their work, and instead were expected to abide by the rules set forth by the government. This restriction on creativity and freedom of expression is what makes the works of art from this period so fascinating and unique.
