About The Artwork

The artist sets a scene showing priests and acolytes standing in attitudes of supplication and homage before an imposing statue of Jesus bearing a regal and lordly countenance. Behind the image a sinister dimly outlined figure looms with a sense of evil that apparently tempts the figure to direct His supplicants towards evil ends and purposes. Since the beginning of human history (and probably long before), a host of shamans, priests, clerics, and ecclesiastics have employed their supposed connections with the spiritual powers of the universe to bless or curse and heal or destroy the souls that come under their influence. They thrive on the ignorance of their followers; they flourish on fears that they themselves create and nourish in the hearts of their supplicants. Some of Jesus’ most devout followers have become the greatest enemies of His loving message. “Free men make themselves free,” Edmund Burke wrote. We must be responsible to seek out wise men and women who will guide us into freedom through spiritual wisdom and flee religious leaders who will guide us into enslavement to a religious orthodoxy.
