ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This small piece started off as several light washes of oil paint using a wide brush. It created a subtle pattern similar to tartan but lacked any real depth. Keeping the theme of tartan in mind I selected a few colours straight from the tube to the canvas paper (250 gsm). Working quickly and slashing with a palette knife I applied and removed paint until an image began to form. I then added some marks with a charcoal pencil. When I look at this I see a city skyline on fire, it was very in the moment and the colours I used have a Basquiat feel to them, who I only recently discovered. I was listening to some aggressive punk music and I think that had an impact on the painting. After the initial washes of colour it was finished pretty quickly. This is shipped without hanging hardware and unframed. Thanks for looking.

I am a 31 year old photographer and artist. I love the works of Francis Bacon, David Lynch, Basquiat, Hamis Samar, William Eggleston and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Art, music, travel and culture are my passions as well as family and nature. I enjoy photographing the unusual and the process of manipulation. Both with digital photography and painting. I originally started taking photographs using a Polaroid camera but moved onto 35 mm soon after. I use a dslr mainly now but still use film. When I am not creating art or riding my motorbikes I teach Sociology and Anthropology at secondary school in Scotland.
