ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I chose to name this collection "The Gold in the Shadow" because of an interesting book that I read, called "Owning Your Own Shadow", by Robert A. Johnson, which is about understanding the dark side of the psyche. According to the author (amongst many other interesting things), all of us have qualities that we tend to deny, that we don't accept as a part of ourselves. Many of the times we project those qualities onto other people, it is called our hero-worshipping capacity in action. We can spend an entire lifetime admiring in others the qualities that we deny in ourselves, (or as i tried to express here with these paintings) we can try to reclaim our own shadow and make ourselves more complete. I found myself exploring through strong textures, contrast between light and dark, and of course, using golden details to complete my metaphor. Its a new beginning, a kind of a rebirth, and also a journey in which hopefully the Gold comes out of the Dark in the end.

Initially a handmade jewellery artist and now a painter. The creative process of my work is the sum of my past skills, my visual concepts and basic key elements: the exploration of the subconscious through the use of colour and improvisation, while employing the physicality of paint through textures and juxtapositions in a process of catharsis. Not often noticeable, I sometimes rework a painting through layering and texturing, symbolizing how circumstances and life itself change and alter over time, using my hands in the process as if that change is the product of our own hands, as if one could maintain control over life. The work reflects the relationship I have with myself and the existence/void, that leads into the necessity of embedding these emotions into the medium - the canvas. While I allow a certain amount of expectation and mediation between reality and fiction through the painting, the rest is left to chance to the viewer’s attention which inevitably exposes the randomness and subjectivity that permeates existence. “If you want to have clean ideas, change them like shirts.” - Francis Picabia wrote. Not embracing one particular style, I’d rather keep cycling through styles and experiment with unorthodox techniques and ideas. This allows me to embrace real freedom in creation while going through a catharsis of real emotions.
