ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"The Grey Winds of Spring" was painted during the chronic-19 lockdown. This large scale acrylic painting (32" x 36" on canvas) was created in my home studio during the Covid-19 crisis. I am a person who feels a deep connection with the natural world. I am happiest and most inspired when I am able to be outside exploring nature. With the restrictions demanded on us during the pandemic my ability to be in the natural spaces I prefer was highly limited. This painting is my attempt to illustrate the beauty of the evolution of spring. Here is Wisconsin spring can be very rainy, grey, and windy. We endure knowing what beauty lies on the other side of nature's outbursts. This was my way of bringing the outside world into my studio, and most importantly into my creative being.

My art celebrates the blend of past and present, the imagined and the tangible, the lost and the enduring. I am fascinated by the physical transformation and evidence of time passing. Particularly intriguing are the patinas that form where architectural structures meet atmospheric effects, showcasing a history of changing colors and mark-making. These surfaces, whether intentionally created or naturally evolved, resonate visually and poetically in my paintings. Ancestral influences play a significant role in my art, with a deep admiration for the textured history of Italy. My travels to Italy exposed me to a rich tapestry of imagery where ancient artworks intertwine with contemporary street culture. This fusion of past and present, memory and invention, continues to shape my artistic perspective. While the weathered walls and fading frescoes of Italy inspire me, everyday urban scenes also hold artistic influence. With a lifelong dedication to the arts, I find myself drawn to exploring the concept of age in culture and the arts. Embracing the philosophy of "paint for paint’s sake," I emphasize the unique qualities of each medium while incorporating images and textures that resonate with me. In my acrylic works, I draw inspiration from daily experiences, infusing each canvas with multi-layered geometric compositions. When working with oils, I am captivated by the aged patinas and decay of surfaces. My ultimate aim is to create art that sparks engaging, enlightening, and enriching conversations with the viewer.
