The inspiration for this complex and highly detailed work came from the mathematical problem known as ‘perfect square dissection’ or ‘squaring the square’. Theories encompassing fractal cosmology, the multiverse, brane cosmology, and the holographic universe were referenced during the conceptual drawings. The overall rationale of the painting was to convey the enormity of the Universe, its mathematical structure, and our interconnectedness back to the Creator. Squares of canvas have been laid-up in a random, overlapping pattern, hinting at the multi-dimensional nature of the Universe. The canvas is painted with a free-flowing blend of indigos, ultramarines and iridescent blues that merge and fuse to provide a richly-coloured backdrop, evoking feelings of the infinity of space. Overlaying the cosmic backdrop, gold constellation-like structures are floating. Close inspection reveals the constellations exhibiting a fractal nature; each constellation contains a smaller constellation, ad-infinitum. All of the constellations are connected via gold microwaves to the singular small gold square near the painting’s centre, the source of all creation. Acrylic paint on canvas squares bonded onto wood board.

As a boy I used to love spending hours drawing complex geometrical patterns with compasses; then colouring them in with pencils to make wonderfully complex, psychedelic pictures. I did not know it at the time, but I was using basic rules of sacred geometry to create mandala-type pictures. Years later, after completing my MSc, I spent 20 odd years in construction and architecture. I am fortunate to now work full-time as an artist. I work with both acrylic paints and metals to produce a range of paintings, metal wall sculpture, and custom copper interior design features. A feature of all of my metal artwork is that they are finished with hand-applied authentic & traditional acid patina finishes. Each and every patina has a distinctive character and personality. It is these subtle differences that ensure each piece is truly unique. Every patina finish is as individual as a person’s fingerprint. Everything is designed, handmade and finished by me. All my artwork is strongly guided by mathematical and geometrical proportions, especially those relating to circles (Plato’s ‘Perfect Form’) and the Fibonacci number series (AKA the Divine Proportion, the Golden Ratio, and the Sacred Cut). The broad underlying philosophy behind my art is exploring the apparent geometrical and harmonic relationships that appear to occur at all scales in the universe; from the quantum world to the cosmic scale, and probably into higher dimensions. All of creation appears to be determined and guided by the invisible pulse (Shiva’s drum). Plato succinctly surmised this concept, “God ever geometrises”.
