ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Oak Tree is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a Emancipation Oak tree with a teacher and school children. The National Geographic Society designated the “Emancipation Oak” as one of the “Ten Great Trees” in the world. It stands near the entrance to the historically black college, Hampton University. In 1863 under its 100-foot diameter canopy members of the black community gathered to hear the first Southern reading of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Teacher and humanitarian Mary Smith Peake, 1823-1862, was best known for starting a school for the children of former slaves in the shade cast by this majestic oak tree.
