I live and work in Paris. I was born and grew up in South Africa, but my home – and my life – have been in Paris for many years. I am a British national. Work is painting and writing. Or rather I paint and I write, but neither can I describe as work. I mean it’s not like taking public transport to an office every morning, so there are those who will say I am amusing myself here in Paris. And yes, I am amusing myself here in Paris, painting and writing. I’ve been writing for longer than I’ve been painting, but I’ve had painting in mind for many years. Then, one day, I decided that now I will paint. Having grown up in Africa, what I put on canvas was what city-life did not give me. This was (is) nature, the sky, the sea, rivers, country cottages and so on. I take up the brush now whenever I long for those things. My legal name is Marilyn Tomlins; my professional name is Marilyn Z. Tomlins, and my painting signature is MZT always.
