ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting from my “Indian Village Women” series is that of two “Sadhvis. This painting depicts two Sadhvis lost in their praise to the Lord. Sadhvi is a Sanskrit term meaning a virtuous and pious woman. Most Sadhvis choose to focus on a spiritual life. In villages of Bengal, many Sadhvis or female “Bauls”, as they are called, roam around in the villages where they spend most of their lives worshipping God, and reciting and singing hymns in His praise.
