This work is painted on a tondo (round canvas) with black edges so it can be hung without the need for a frame. The piece was inspired by daily walks in the densely wooded areas of my local forest. Here I often experienced the movement of minute life - the insects, the shimmer of light on a leaf, the glistening stream. To focus on these details gave me a sense of being a part of the whole fabric of the forest. Some of the marks are loose and expressive marks reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy. The whole surface is highly worked - numerous layers or thin glazes have been applied to create a sheen and a translucence inspired by Renaissance masters. I would like the viewer to feel a sense of calm and a connection to the mysteries of nature. My main influences are Turner for his sublime lighting effects and Monet for his dreamlike depictions of nature. More recent influences are Cruz Jimenez, Chu Teh Chun and Darren Waterston.

United Kingdom
I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
