Set on the corner of East Houston and Lafayette Street in New York, this painting is similar to the earlier Water Towers, but more dynamic. The basic elements are the same: the BP canopy, the billboard, the water towers, and the surrounding buildings, but in this composition the buildings are displayed to show more of the perspective of looking up at the rooftops. There are no horizontals — everything is at an angle. Also, the focus is on the grays linking the billboard, the water towers, and the clouds. The face, roughly life-size, is very realistic, yet is clearly a representation of a photograph within the painting.

Award winning realist painter Nick Savides learned to paint from his mother at 3 years old and never stopped. Inspired by the works of Edward Hopper, the quiet energy within his art captures both a palpable sensation of light and of place. Mr. Savides has been published twice by Nabi Press, featuring urban images of New York City and Paris, as well as landscapes of upstate New York.
