ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I am a long time professional photographer who more recently added painting as one of my outlets for art. My paintings often come from photographs I have made over the years (27 years and counting). You can see my photographic website at . This painting was inspired by a photograph I made at mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Below Mammoth Hot Springs with the geothermal travertine hillside behind, I saw these trees clinging to a steep hillside appearing to me to either be in a struggle to stand upright or perhaps dancing with one another. I loved the white textured background and a few years later when looking for a photograph to paint from I found this composition to be intriguing. It just struck me as something I wanted to paint. And that was good enough for me. This painting came early in my recent painting efforts. I came across some old High School paintings I had made and my wife was impressed and said I should do more paintings. The photography business was getting more and more difficult to get any satisfaction from with the advent of digital and the massive over supply of photographs so I started taking classes and making paintings. Both my Mother and Grandmother were life long painters so I must have had it in my blood. This painting now hangs in the home of a friend who has now collected a few of my paintings and a number of my fine art photographs. What you can get here is a print of the painting but I am also always available for new commissions. Just let me know. Thanks for taking a look. If I can answer any questions I am delighted to do so!

I'm a photographer, painter and occasionally a filmmaker. I attribute my becoming a photographer to the beauty and landscapes I experienced in my youth, mostly in southwest Colorado. In high school I was very inspired by Ansel Adams and the landscapes that surrounded me on the high desert plateau of the four corners area. After studying photography and graphic arts in college in Flagstaff, Arizona I moved to Seattle, Washington where I lived for 32 years. During that time I became very involved in the rock climbing community and all sorts of outdoor recreational pursuits. As far as work goes, I was mostly working in commercial and editorial photography but also shooting more personal artwork that was having to do with nature and landscapes. I seldom showed that work back then. That has changed over the last 10 years or so. I am an artist and always have been one. It took me a while to realize that as I pursued more commercially inclined photography in my early career. There are many artists who have influenced me over my career. Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Gregory Heisler, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson, Elliot Erwitt, Georgia O'Keefe, Andrew Wyeth, Ed Mell, and many more. In painting I am mostly self taught except for a handful of classes and workshops I've taken over the years and whatever I absorbed from my mother and grandmother in all the time I watched their life long painting / art journeys. My photography was learned through years of formal training in high school and college and tutelage while working with over 100 different photographers when I was a freelance photographers assistant... that and a lot of practice and perseverance over 35+ years. My main drive in my art is to use photography, painting, and film making as vehicles for exploring and learning. To learn, to understand, to share.
