ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This striking painting is not as abstract as it may seem at first glance. It’s actually a double portrait. It may take some time to see both faces: one superimposed over the other. The more solid and darker face recedes back. The overlapping whimsical bands outline the other face, with a few lines alluding to the mouth and nose. The viewer is invited to complete the image in the act of creative viewing. The two faces were originally painted side by side. However, in the multiple painting sessions they eventually merged together. The yellow background covers the abandoned ideas, some are still visible as the ghosts of the past. I’ve discovered the incredible joy in applying the multiple layers of pure cadmium yellow, building up the vibrant and living surface that radiates a positive energy. The happy yellow covers up, dissolves and transforms all the earlier struggles into a message of hope and joy. The canvas is hand stretched by the artist on heavy-duty kiln-dried stretcher bars. Ready to hang with the installed wire on the back.

Based in Chicago since 1994, I am pushing against the constrains of the traditional academic education that I received in Moscow, Russia, where I lived for the first twenty six years of my life. I paint quickly: speed grabs essence better than deliberation. I would rather stick with gut reactions than pursue an analytical process. It's mostly about moving energy, which is always alive and moving. Speed takes me past my own thinking where I can easily get bogged down in concepts and ideas. I let my hand tell the story. My process is an intuitive search for the emotional energy underlying the visible form.
