ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is inspired by the masterwork of poet Seamus Heaney and also by meditations on the earth's condition in the current "anthropocene". I believe the paintings encapsulate a language that speaks to the complex array of emotive gestures that kindle the sense of our existential moment in time. The fluid medium of ink and watercolour encourages the automatic responses I look for in my process. My stay at Gordon Onslow Ford's studio at the Lucid Art Foundation Residency, Inverness , California in May 2019 brought about an opening in my practice that enabled these pieces to come forward.

1961Belfast; Northern IrelandBiography Born 1961 in Belfast, Northern Ireland Residence in Madison, South Dakota, USA. Professor of Art at Dakota State University, Madison, SD Alan Montgomery began his life as an artist early on in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He received his undergraduate degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato in 1986. Alan received his MFA in painting from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994. Since then, he has been a Professor of Art at Dakota State University beginning in 2000. His work is published in the 7th and 8th Editions of Henry M. Sayre’s A World of Art published by Pearson Higher Education. Alan’s work is exhibited in Europe and in the U.S. He completed a three-week solo residency at in Inverness California in 2019, where he lived and worked in the studio compound of the late British surrealist Gordon Onslow Ford. His recent work reflects a deep connection to the history of his homeland and ruminations on the poetry of Seamus Heaney among others. It is an irony for him having been landlocked for years that the coast and themes of watery environs remain constant in his work. Film work and Augmented Reality are each areas of interest and he plans to combine with his drawings and paintings in installation pieces.
