ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My Batik series where created using the traditional Indonesian batik technique. At the time, I was contemplating on the similarities between string theory research and the shamanic worldview. The proposed string theories suggest that the universe is comprised of multiple dimensions and this is very similar to the shamanic understanding of the Cosmos that perceives our reality as being one of numerous dimensions of existence. I painted what I imagined the unseen world could look like. The process was partly instinctive and partly research. The use of symbols, geometry and language came naturally. Gestures and abstract patterns allowed the necessary element of chance. The unusual use of brushes for the application of wax alongside the traditional canting tool, allowed for a broader visual vocabulary.
