ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Meaning behind the artwork: There was no particular plan behind this piece, I let my mind wonder and used the materials/tools on my desk to express how I felt at the time. A profound projection of a negative state of mind was captured along with the feelings of being lost, confussed, critized and weak. Medium: Acrylic, marker and polychromos on paper. Year: 2021 Artist favourite and most precious piece. Original is not for sale.

A professional artist who started her journey as an interior designer. Born and raised in Venezuela then moved to Canada in her early teens, Maria showed an early interest in art and design from a very young age, growing up in a creative household with Interior Designer mother and Engineer father. This sparked her interest in pursuing a career in the design industry, leading her to earn a degree in Environmental Design, majoring in Interior Design from OCAD University in Toronto. Maria honed her skills in design, and found herself drawn to the creative aspect of the job. She loved the process of taking an empty space and turning it into a functional, aesthetically pleasing environment. But as time passed, Maria started to feel limited by the restrictions of interior design. She felt there was more to explore and express artistically that she couldn't within the scope of interior design. She found herself increasingly drawn to fine arts and began exploring different forms and styles in her free time, eventually finding her niche within abstract art - using her intangible thoughts, emotions and perspective to create tangible recordings. Her background in design proved to be an asset in her artistic practice, as she was able to incorporate her understanding of composition, color theory and visual communication into her work.
