ABOUT THE ARTWORK

ORIGINAL SOLD, Corporate Collection The Waco Hippodrome is one of my favorite places. Especially fascinating when it's lit up at night, I could not resist making the Hippodrome the first in a series of paintings of the attractions and landmarks in the Waco, Texas area. I am now based in Woodway, Texas, which is adjacent to Waco. Check it out at Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Waco Hippodrome first opened in 1914 as the Waco Theater. Through the years it has been a performing arts center in one form or another including live acts, vaudeville, road shows, concerts, local talent, served as a picture house, and eventually a movie house. It would endure a fire in the 1920's that destroyed part of the front of the building, changing consumer interest to theaters in suburban areas, and multiple renovations. Thanks to its latest renovation in 2012, this gorgeous vintage theater retained its classic look, but a few changes have expanded the functionality allowing two films to be shown simultaneously as well as being a dinner theater. Today's offerings include first run and classic films, concerts, live theater, stand up comedy, dance, and more. UPDATE: Recent remodel and expansion now includes more screen, event area, the Raleigh Diner and Rooftop Bar. This painting was completed in 2017, prior to the expansion. Stay tuned for a future painting that will include a view the expansion with the iconic ALICO in the distance! The Waco / Woodway, Texas area has become quite a travel destination with so much to offer. The Waco Hippodrome is a must see if you plan to visit. And, by the way, if you don't know the word "hippodrome", here's a link to check out its famous history

For Waco, Texas-based professional artist and instructor Lee James, it’s all about color and texture. Lee’s style is best described as blending aspects of impressionism and realism with a strong emphasis on bold, vivid, even playful use of color in light-filled paintings. His favored medium is acrylic as it can be used like oils or watercolor. Thrilled to embark on each new painting, his ultimate reward is your enjoyment of the “worlds” he creates in each painting. Lee has a lifelong interest in architecture, having owned two National Historic Register Plantations and even designed homes. Structures of some type will almost always be found in his landscapes. A love of coastal, boats, cars and trucks, and animals have also had a profound influence in his work as well as a strong interest in nocturnal scenes. Lee is not a “high noon” painter. Early morning, later in the afternoon, and evening…”these are the times when colors are more intense, subjects are more interesting” and will always be part of his works. With an intense love of color, Lee rarely mixes color on the palette, choosing instead to pickup multiple colors, with a palette knife, and “let it happen” as the paint goes on the canvas. “The result is far more exciting!”
