ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Encaustic (wax) on Wood in a plain wood frame. As though in a dream, a multi-colored figure seems poised to arise in the darkness. Without defining lines or shadows, it also has no gender or nationality. Above it, birds float in the dark sky. I chose a frigate bird, both for it's red pouch and for it's symbolism. These birds are venerated by seafarers for their abilities to fly long distances without landing, to find their way home and to show sailors the direction of land. These strange birds live by catching fish, but they have no oil on their feathers and can't land on the water like other water birds. They are sometimes considered to be good omens. The relationship of the birds to the figure seems to suggest two directions of movement - up and forward. Therefore the word "avanza" (get moving) is inscribed into the dark sky.

Art is a passion, which I steadfastly develop in my own way, getting inspiration from fragments of poetry, photographs or stories, rather than from drawings or paintings of other artists. Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion, curator of my solo exhibition in Tel Aviv wrote: “She doesn’t paint according to instructions or styles, but evolves at her own pace, creating original paintings manifesting passages connecting different realities.” My story stretches from my childhood home in Southern California to the Sea of Galilee in Israel. My dual citizenship has strongly influenced my perspectives. From multiple traditions, art emerges as the visual expression of movement and multi-layered ideas. I am currently working with encaustic paint that I make in my studio. My work incorporates a variety of materials: oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil sketches, and found objects.
