This portrait titled "Woman Wearing a Hijab" won first place in a campus art contest at California State University Channel Islands. It was bought by the University and hangs in the Student Union Building. My portraits explore empathy through the study of the individual and their inner experience. I work with acrylic paint using dramatic contrast to draw attention to specific areas of the face. Often my subjects are unknown or intentionally presented as anonymous. The colors I use highlight emotion and interact with the viewer on a subconscious or symbolic level.

Jessica Mavropoulos graduated with a BFA degree from Cal State University Channel Islands. Her work has been seen in galleries in Southern California and St. Louis Missouri. Her unique representation of Lady Liberty titled 'Mother of Exiles' has been used as a visual protest sign all over the united states. In addition to creating a wide range of visual art, Jessica lives full time in her Airstream, and works as a traveling political canvasser in Arizona. Her experiences speaking to thousands of people during these contentious times have inspired her to start a blog titled XENIATRAVELS which will feature her writing, photography, short films, as well as a new body of impressionistic art. Jessica will explore the lessons and challenges that arise from living in nature, optimism, hope, as well as resilience.
