About The Artwork

“WTC: 09/11", 2012-2014 Series of 9 paintings Dimensions: 195 x 130 cm Medium: Acrylic on canvas The events of September 11, 2001 shocked me, as much as they shocked everyone else. I immediately understood that fear and terror can come, all of a sudden, from anywhere, be it far away, or in one’s close vicinity. Moreover, such extraordinary incidents may become commonplace, everyday occurrences. The twin towers had always been associated with New York. They were the very symbol of the North American metropolis. Another symbol associated with NY is that of Big Apple, that is to say the apple. Thus the cloud of ash or black smoke, the two vertical bars, the silhouettes of the towers and the apple, became recurring themes for me. As I work with abstract symbols and elements, I have immediately thought about working on or related to this topic, but I had a hard time finding the right form visualizing what was going to become the final format for my paintings. The message within will always be a positive one: the world will always and forever find the resources to revert to calm and prosperity. It is the reason for using black along side very strong colors. The size of the panels was chosen with the aim of emphasizing the power of the images, with the shape also contributing to the sense of strength and magnitude. The surrounding white background adds to the suggestion of a state of suspension, interruption, delay, discomfort, insecurity and uncertainty. At the same time, white is suggestive of hope and positivity. The large patches of colour are set in a single, rigorous and firm movement; sometimes after long awaiting moments, waiting for the right impulse, inspiration. The color for each layer is carefully prepared large-sized containers, mixed in from primary and secondary colors to which are added extra pigments and occasionally gold dust, in order to boost brilliance and color intensity. Black comes from a mixture of several types of black and an added pigment in carefully selected quantities and qualities. The works are painted and dried horizontally, and layers of paint are added after minimum 24-hour intervals. For some of the works, unique rosin masks are added or mask directly painted on canvas (with the use of varying widths and textures of tape). In some areas the color is placed with the knife, in some areas the dripping technique was used (brush or pail) or placed directly from specially made. Different brush strokes are visible, as the result of a variety of Chinese brushes: either bamboo or coconut (for colour intensity) or with wide head (for sharp and polished look). The final impression is of accuracy and clarity for a very powerful visual impact. The colors are vivid rendering the positivity of the message, despite the large black areas. For each work execution time ranged from 1 to 2 months. Works can be displayed (bought) together or separately. Purchase price negotiable for the entire series (9 works).

Since the debut of her career, Cristina Passima has had a sustained professional activity both in her home country of Romania and internationally, thus accumulating a long experience in the organization and realization of projects in the public space as well as in major group and personal exhibitions. She is versed in all practices related to contemporary art, including work with teams of designers and architects as well as urban environment projects, each project being based on the realization of a real-scale module or reduced scale, as suitable for the exhibition space. Among her latest projects are "Reflections / Rainbow" – a traveling personal exhibition between Timisoara and Paris, for the “Saisons croisés” edition 2019, and "Bleu" – an installation designed for an open space, and selected in 2016 by HAROPA (Ports of Paris - Seine – Normandy), for the project "Reinventing the Seine". Between 2011 and 2015 she is the coordinator of the international project "Dialogue with the warriors of the Emperor Qin warriors” - EU and China sculpture show. Organized on the initiative of Qu Art - Contemporary and Modern Sculpture of Brussels - this traveling international exhibition toured throughout China, in eight museums of contemporary art, in 2012. Between 2013 and 2016 it was also exhibited in Europe: Tallinn, Lisbon, Sofia, Rotterdam, Prague, Bucharest, Paris, Luxembourg and Brussels. Cristina Passima’s work “The Endless Ribbon” was Romania’s entry to this international artistic event. Cristina Passima is fascinated by the sign, be it the graphic sign, painted or in volume. She started her artistic career with engravings (woodcuts and etchings) but her drawings and acrylic works on paper that have consecrated her as an artist. They can be described as simple yet striking images, in the neo-expressionist spirit. With collage she has introduced a tactile dimension to her works, acting as an invitation to dialogue. Adrian Guta - Art Critic, Senior Lecturer, Dean of the Faculty of History and Theory of Art, National University of the Arts, Bucharest Romanian contemporary sculpture Ianchelevici Museum, La Louvière, Belgium, 2007 In the second half of the 1990s, Cristina Passima began working on an environmental art project. It is an imposing complex, designed as a long route leading from the northern entrance of Bucharest to the center of the city.
