Sandgroper is a colloquial term for a West Australian which is my adopted home on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The work is inspired by the breakdown of ink inside Polaroid photos that are past their expiry date. I use the effects to talk about my place here surrounded by water. I hope viewers will experience an abstact sense of what it feels like to live on the edge of a vast desert on one side and vast ocean on another. The piece has both elements in it. I also hope they can enjoy the colour and forms for their own sake free of place. The medium of Oil on board suits my interest in pouring and thinning out paint till it is making random patterns that I can control or not depending on how much or little is applied. I visualize the thin washes of ink in the Polaroids and use them as a starting point for experimenting with oil paint.
