In Italy, unfortunately, many ancient churches are abandoned, especially in the countryside. This small church and its rectory are abandoned and semi-destroyed: no one lives in the surrounding countryside anymore. Yet until a few years ago the inhabitants were many: in fact the memorial stone for the dead of the parish in the First World War bears many names. The cypresses around the stone protect it and a laurel wreath with the tricolor ribbon shows that there is still respect for the sacrifice of those fallen. All these sentiments are contained in this picture: the first of a series on churches and houses in the Italian countryside, especially in my Romagna.

Stefano Piccioli, Architect and painter, paints images of the Italian territory with the attention of a geographer, also interested in transformations and all those more or less small signs (often negative ones) that daily life imprints on the landscape. Emotions do not always derive from large overall images, but also from small details or partial visions that painting indelibly fixes in memory. Stefano Piccioli uses the very slow means of oil painting to reproduce the emotions that the landscape contains and transmits.
