About The Artwork

In the world of humans, albinos people and animals are often associated to the divine, and to magic properties which often has led to their persecution. Also among animals are albinos an endagered species. Because of their beauty white deers are still today the most requested animals amongst trophy hunters. Like the unicorn also the albino deer appears often as a fable-like creature and stands for purity of the soul. The drawing shows four albino deers which can be seen at the same time as different aspects of the same deer, or as a deers group or family. Western iconography generally presents deers and other wild animals as tamed, willing to please the humans, and give up their freedom. Often they show human-like traits and behaviours. An example is of course Walt Disney “Bambi”. In our society wild animals are not only often deprived of their life, natural habitat, food, water or trapped in concrete cages; they are also deprived of their natural insticts, their “wilderness”. The albino deers in this drawing are neither friendly nor tamed. They look the spectator directly in the eyes with a threatening expression. They are clearly depicted in the act of fighting but is unclear whether they are about to fight us, watchers, or to fight among themselves. At the same time the work can also be seen as the expression of an inner battle taking place within the artist herself.
