The Gobi Desert 45.3748, 101.838288889 Looking East Andai, Mongolia Many believe there is a mountain full of gold somewhere in the Andai and that the mythical Griffin, was attracted to the treasure buried deep in the underground. There is some historical evidence that the myth of the griffin itself was born in the Andai possibly by wanderers who found the remains of the legendary creatures scattered across the sands. On a paleontology expedition in the region, our team established camp for just one day in the Andai basin to survey one of the sites made famous by the 20th century expedition led by Roy Chapman Andrews. As the sun sunk to low, the landscape transformed into a tableau worthy of it's mythical reputation. Mesmerized by the perfectly complimentary colors of a teal sky and the orange desert sand, I sat and contemplated myth, and time, and isolation. For hours I sat, thousands of miles from anyone who wasn't on our expedition wondering who the last person was to sit where I was; and who will be the next.
