The lighting designer, Xato Dimitri, was born in Belgium in 1975. After studies in landscape architecture and art history in Ghent, Xato moved to Ceret, France, where he designed and made lamps, often with copper, his preferred material. In Céret he met other artists, such asthe painter Patrick Loste, the musician and painter Pascal Comelade and the painter Marc Fourquet, with whom he shared a passion for cooking. Xato’s driving forces are cooking and art. His creative process is fed by both the noise and bustle of the kitchen and the silence of the solitude of his workshop, in both cases paying attention to artistic detail. Drawn by the profound and pure aestheticism of Japanese sushi, Xato opened a sushi restaurant. In 2013 he catered for the Iggy Pop tour in the south of France. Along with his restaurant work Xato continued to paint, but his copper light fixtures became more sought after by restaurateurs and private collectors. Gradually, his chandeliers gave way to more purely abstract luminous objects and contemporary art installations. He has now settled in Catalonia, near Cadaques and has begun to work in photography. His experience with various artistic and culinary disciplines infuses his work with innovative ideas. He now lives in La Selva de Mar, in the province of Girona where he exhibits his works.
