About The Artwork

During my visit to Subotica, a beautiful city in the north of Serbia in the province of Vojvodina, full of architectural, cultural and religious sights, I could not miss this magnificent sacral building. I went inside and was immediately delighted with the sight. When you enter the Subotica synagogue, you are so enchanted by the sight that you do not know where to look first. All around you, there are beautifully decorated architectural elements. When you raise your head and look up, the scene is even more gorgeous. Straight above, you can see a beautiful large luxury chandelier that hangs from the magnificent dome with semicircular windows decorated with stained glass through which daylight enters. That scene is so impressive that it is hard to describe it in words. You simply must see it. The synagogue in Subotica is one of the largest in the world. It is the second largest in Europe and fifth in the world. In addition, it is certainly one of the most beautiful. It was built in 1902 in Art Nouveau style by the project of Budapest architects Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab, associate architect Ödön Lechner, the creator of the Hungarian Secession. In 1974 it was declared as a cultural monument of exceptional importance. Most of the Jews of Subotica lost their lives in the Holocaust, so that today, among other things, it is a memory of them. The synagogue is one of the most valuable achievements of these Central European kinds of religious architecture. It is characterized by bold and modern architectural designs, stained glass ornaments and stylization taken from Hungarian folklore, such as the stylized petals of roses, lilies and carnations and peacock feathers it is certainly one of the most beautiful sacral buildings in this region and you should definitely visit it if you ever come to Serbia and Subotica. From the collection of Sacral Objects and Cathedrals. Subotica, Vojvodina, Serbia.
