JC is an expressionist artist whose work seeks to explore the intricate complexities of consciousness. The building blocks of our personality are a complex system of likes and dislikes. The difference between you and I, when talking of personality, is a mere matter of a difference in preference. We then hold onto these preferences and think they identify us. The logical mind thinks I do what I like, this is my freedom. However, the very bondage of life is in our likes and dislikes. We think we are free, however when we look at it closely, we have developed subconscious behaviour patterns that either move us toward what we like, or away from suffering. Therefore, our perceived freedom is repetitious behaviour patterns of a hedonistic nature. We shift from being free to choose the course of our life, into a reactive stimulus/response behaviour pattern that robs us of conscious choice. This is the basis of all suffering. Furthermore, the very basis of life is to seek out our desires. Thinking our seemingly insatiable appetite for happiness is in our next acquisition, or the next thing we would like. It’s a belief that’s short lived as with each new addition of material possession, we soon discover our newly acquired like didn’t quite fulfill us as we may have thought it would. Prolonging our suffering as we continue to long for something more than ourselves. Consciously or subconsciously, there is an internal battle being played out in our minds. Between materiality and spirituality. Natures often subconscious forces that pull us in opposing directions as we pursue our likes in an effort to fulfill our desires in the name of continuous expansion. JC tries to portray these complexities, and his own spiritual journey, by giving them visual representation in a digital form. He invites the viewer to question their own subjective reality and consider how their own repetitious behaviour patterns and compulsions are standing in the way of their ultimate happiness.
