About The Artwork

This series is inspired by a great conversation with a store owner who has masks from all over the world. This is the third in the series. While they’re not always originals, the part that got me green with envy was they had travelled to each of these places and knew the story of each mask. The Fang Ngil is the most famous of them all with only about 12 intact masks still in existence. Worn by the Fang communities of Gabon, this ceremonial mask was the face of society administered justice and control. The Ngil were a male secret brotherhood responsible for administering justice in the Fang communities, operating at night (Ngil). The mask represents a terrifying entity and the Ngil were seen as sorcerers handing down sentences to those who did not follow the law. They emerged wearing the pale long mask at night intended to create a fearsome effect to the wrong doer. A great conversation and history lesson leading to time well spent, a new friend and a satisfying piece of art carrying away with me a new curiosity for this history. Back with another mask and another snippet from their travel story soon. This is the final mask - the Fang Ngil (Madagascar).

I live and work in England and have lived in Reading, Berkshire for 14 years. My artwork features urban everyday moments inspired by the lives lived around me. I think of myself less as an artist and more as an observer, a storyteller. When I was younger, I think I was, as most of us are, trying to head somewhere really fast, chasing my tomorrow at the expense of today. I'm still guilty of that, pushing ahead in my career, trying to be super mom, super wife, staying organised - and I plan tomorrow so well, that I forget to enjoy today. And life is strange that way - the everyday flashes by from moment to moment but when you look back, things stay sharper for longer. Through my paintings, I'm trying to capture the bright stories of our lives. I am self taught and I work in the digital art medium with media such as procreate, photoshop and fresco. The themes I like to work with are everyday urban moments with friends, families, homes... I try to tell stories through my paintings and I hope you are able to join in when you purchase one of my prints. My style is contemporary and a mix of illustration and soft lines. Light and shadows play an important role in the atmosphere of my work. The effect I try to replicate is the way the eye would see - sharp focus in the first instance on what the message is and then, as it absorbs a scene, some details are clearer while others are never registered but their presence is felt.
