ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Legend has it that high in the heart of the Balkans, two shepherds fell asleep by a remote mountain spring. And by accident, they let its waters flow on to the plain below, creating two huge, sparkling blue lakes, Large and Little Prespa. Perched high above sea level, straddling Albania, Greece, and the Republic of North Macedonia, the Prespa lakes are amongst the oldest and largest in Europe, first formed more than five million years ago. This is the first photograph from my long-term project titled "Ljubojno - Abandoned Prespa". I took this photo from my car while exploring the vast lake shore. The whole scene seamed very dystopian as the young woman worked on her field. This image gave me the backdrop, the inspiration to start this project. The Lake Prespa region faces extinction challenges, partly due to neglect and corruption and partly due to climate change that puts enormous pressure on the region and the ancient lake's receding waters.

I graduated from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje with a bachelor's degree in Art History and Archaeology. I was always surrounded by art growing up with a musician father and through my formal education. Being emotional and introvert I have a strong feeling for the ephemeral world around us, the climate change and the human neglect. So I take photographs of my reality, my surroundings, the places I grew up in and truly love, the people and places in the cities I live in or visit. Looking at the work of the photographers who I deem my mentors (W.Eugene Smith, Josef Koudelka, Boris Smelov) it becomes evident how the world has changed since their time, their reality. So I know, the reality of my son will be very different from my reality today. This thought drives me through my work and gives me inspiration to document my reality as a legacy of my time on Earth but also to encourage the people, the communities to demand a change of practice from their governments. To raise awareness of certain conditions and stimulate change.
