The Free Way Series consists of 200 abstract photos taken across the interstates of the United States. The drive across America can be beautiful vistas one moment, but then hypnotic timelapse blurs the next. What Steve Hartman is capturing is the sense of motion and more than a snapshot of time, but trying to capture through motion blur a length of time. By titling this series Free Way, Steve Hartman is acknowledging a person’s ability to explore experiences and processes without borders. The ‘Free Way’ series crystallizes what I perceive hurtling down the freeway: shapes, colors, contrasts, the rhythm of movement, and the essence of energy—an attempt to craft a hypnotic visual vocabulary from an active landscape. As my mind wanders, a partnership between muscle memory and my car ensures the primary goal: arriving safely. But what induces this hypnotic state? Is it the rhythmic rumble of tires against pavement or the continuous motion blur at 70 miles per hour? Perhaps, it’s a blend of both. I suspect I have a degree of dyslexia, which may explain my affinity for art and image-making. It’s almost as if my heightened visual senses broaden my peripheral vision more than usual. While the hypnotic theory remains speculative, my peripheral awareness is undeniably acute—albeit never in sharp focus, yet always image-aware.
