ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Photographed May 2019 North Namibia, border to Angola A road trip in May 2019 through Namibia brought me to the HIMBAS. Unusual sculptural beauty, enhanced by intricate hairstyles and their skins rubbed with red ochre - the himbas, an ancient semi-nomadic tribe living in the Kunene Region of Namibia & Angola. Their 1st settlements can be traced back to the early 16th century. At the end of the 19th century Namibia was plagued by a relentless bovine epidemic. Most of the cattle that the #Herero tribe depended on perished, leading to a great crisis which lead the tribe to move to different regions. Still, some decided to stay & struggle for survival instead. Then & there the Himba identity came into being. Himba means beggar & many of those that remained roamed the vast Kaokoland in search of cattle & crops asking others for help. The women are famous for rubbing their bodies with #otjize, believed to protect their skins against the harsh climate. The red mixture is said to symbolize earth's rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life. One of the most remarkable traits is that the women are not allowed to use water for washing. This dates back to the great droughts where water was scarce & only men were allowed access for washing purposes. The women do take a daily smoke bath for personal hygiene however. __________ Signed, dated and inscribed with title and the edition number. Sara grew up in rural Bavaria not far from Munich, Germany. But her ancestry stretches back to Romania and Russia. Her father was of German-Jewish descent. Encouraged by her upbringing to be open to the world, her keen interest in singular collector’s items and all aspects of cultures began at a young age. She studied Fashion and Graphic Design in Italy, works as an Art Director and Product Manager for international companies in the luxury goods sector. It was not trends she followed but her own instincts – and the philosophy of her parents: "Beauty is not the only thing in life that matters. Experiences are vital because no one can take those away from us." With her curiosity in hand, Sara travels from the deserts of the Middle East to out of the way Romanian villages taking photos that tell stories. “I never come home without bringing something with me.” Her photography tells stories and immortalises moments.
