ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inter-phasic is a new series of abstract photographs which focuses on the most crucial element in life - light! Just as light gives life to every living thing, the study of light in the Inter-Phasic series considers the play of light in the 'daily living' of our lives. The smallest cell has a metabolic phase, in which the cell obtains nutrients and metabolises them, grows, reads its DNA, and conducts other "normal" cell functions - just like a cell, light appears to have a life of its own. An utterly unpredictable element, the play of light is under a constant state of change and influences our perception of our world at large. The Inter-Phasic series will ultimately incorporate line-drawings, projections and abstract photographs (as a planned body of work) which will strikingly emphasise the sculptural qualities of a refracted beam of light. This new work creates an illusion of three-dimensional shapes, ellipses, waves and flat planes that gradually shift, contract and focus our attention to a fixed point in time and space. The Artist sought to capture the fleeting beauty of a momentary flash of light using a dichroic filter as an initial experiment in the study of light and composition — the resulting image depicts the intersecting and ever-shifting transitory forms that appear for a moment in time. Just as the pattern of light is ever-evolving, the Inter-Phasic study will continue to shift and evolve as a body of work for the Artist over time. About the Artist: An art maker for almost two decades, studied with the Julian Ashton Art School Sydney, one of the most influential art schools in Australia and now based in Singapore. Paton is considered a purist painter with a foundation in traditional, classical art techniques. Still, he chooses to work in a highly abstracted manner across the mediums of encaustic painting, drawing, photography, new, and mixed media. An artist that takes great joy in creating impactful visual compositions, with a sustained interest in form and color, his work draws upon the traditional techniques of painting, in particular minimalism and abstract expressionism, but is also influenced by contemporary design, social commentary, and above all, the emotional impact of music. Using color as a vehicle, his work triggers emotional responses through both sophisticated and playful palettes.
