About The Artwork

Mdina is the old, medieval city which itself is older than what its outer skin layer shows. Nowadays an iconic shape sitting atop a hill, offering a silhouette that is synonymous with Malta as a whole. It is a maze of haphazard streets and narrow alleys, purposely built this way to play with the minds of any successful bastion-climber. The streets offer a treasure trove of opportunities for any photographer, and each and every time you'll visit, you'll always find something "new" to shoot. I this case, the copper tones of the knocker as well as the shape and weathering on the matching letterbox immediately caught my eye. These were further enhanced by the green tones of the door itself, as well as the texture of the wood and the ageing of the paint. "Shall I go two thirds, shooting landscape?". That was my first instinct, however I framed the letterbox and knocker dead-centre in a portrait picture in my mind and told myself this was the way to go for more impact and to further highlight the subject itself.

William was born in Malta in 1972 and spent his early childhood years in London, England as his family had moved to Bethnal Green, where they lived for seven years before relocating back to the sunny island in the Mediterranean in 1979. The seeds for his passion for photography were planted when his older sister gave him a Kodak Instamatic camera loaded with film for his 6th birthday. He proceeded to the back garden and his first-ever photos were shot on that day; those first photos are still cherished and kept safe in an old photo album, even if the colours have slightly faded away due to age.
