Looking Back is an image from Sanguinho, a historic, abandoned village on the island of Sao Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. When I came across this scene, I found it haunting and profoundly compelling with its layers of life and history. It felt like looking back through time and space to the emergence of new life. Sanguinho was built in the mid-1800s on high ground following river flooding in the nearby coastal municipality of Faial da Terra. In the 1950s, most of the inhabitants left the village to emmigrate or find work closer to larger towns and schools. Sanguinho is accessible by hiking or via a steep donkey road up the mountain.

I've been a New England-based professional portrait and fine art photographer for over twenty years. My work explores the elements of landscapes through light, color, texture, form and shape, and pattern and lines. I'm intrigued by how subtle and varying combinations of these elements create a wide spectrum of moods, from tension, chaos, and entropy, to calm, control, and order.
