ABOUT THE ARTWORK
For the 12” version of the Joy Division single “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” the artwork features a photograph of a grieving angel on the Ribaudo family tomb in Genoa’s Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno. This tomb, sculpted by Onorato Toso around 1910, was captured in a photograph by Bernard Pierre Wolff in 1978. The artwork for both “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and the album “Closer” (both released in 1980, the latter just two months after the suicide of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis) was designed by Factory Records’ Peter Saville.
